I began my career as an educator and while learning my craft as a writer, continued to teach. I have taught high school American history, World history, World Geography, Environmental Studies, English, and worked as a substitute or assistant in pre-school, elementary, and middle school and volunteered in school libraries. I have also taught English to international students through Houston Community College. All that means is that I am comfortable with any age audience. For many years I had my own business called, Living History Visits, where I dressed up in character from different periods of American history and made school presentations.
Doing “hands-on” teaching and interacting with the students is a central part of my history presentations. I do a presentation on life during the Civil War and life on the Texas frontier. I also do writing workshops to help students dig a little deeper 1) getting to know their main character and 2) using all their senses to help the story become more vivid to the reader.
